Mithras Trio’s second album for Linn, Fountain of Youth, explores the surprising number of piano trios written by composers at the very start of their careers. Following the "intriguing and eclectic" programming of their debut album Eros, this collection features the world premiere recording of Petrichor by cellist and composer Joy Lisney. Commissioned by the trio and premiered at Wigmore Hall in 2023, the work is named after the distinct, earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil.

The programme is completed by two remarkable youthful works. Shostakovich’s First Piano Trio, written when he was just sixteen, offers glimpses of his mature style where grotesque elements and late-Romanticism mingle in a single movement. Korngold’s Piano Trio, Op. 1—his first published work—displays an exceptional maturity that channels the influences of Mahler, Strauss, and Puccini into a unique and confident voice.
