Tom Smith, the front-person of Editors, has officially announced details of his debut solo album, "There Is Nothing In The Dark That Isn’t There In The Light."

After two decades leading Editors and releasing two albums with Smith & Burrows, Smith is finally stepping into solo territory. Motivated by a desire to reconnect with the raw, acoustic beginnings of his songwriting, he sought to create something more intimate and personal, moving away from the collaborative nature of his band projects. While he initially attempted to shape the songs with long-time collaborator Andy Burrows, he ultimately chose a more solitary path, enlisting producer Iain Archer to help bring his vision to life.

Together, Smith and Archer crafted a record built on emotional honesty and acoustic textures, exploring themes of connection, memory, and resilience. The opening track, ‘Deep Dive,’ serves as the album’s emotional anchor, establishing a tone of gentle hope in the face of loneliness. Throughout the project, Smith balances minimalist arrangements, such as the ache found in ‘Broken Time,’ with the more cinematic and sweeping drama of tracks like ‘Life Is For Living.’

Despite the initial goal of solo authorship, Smith found a deep creative synergy with Archer, shaping the songs through mutual experimentation. Tracks like ‘Northern Line’ and ‘How Many Times’ reflect on past friendships and experiences, while the album closes with ‘Saturday,’ a bittersweet snapshot of fleeting intimacy. Though the record is marked by melancholy, it ultimately resonates with hope, highlighting Smith’s evolution as a songwriter and his desire to capture the essence of his true self.
