To Be Wolves

To Be Wolves: A Novel of the Vestal Virgins - Book Two in The Vesta Shadows trilogy (Revised Edition)After the chaos of war with Egypt, Caesar Augustus now rules not just the city of Rome, but his new empire, too. Yet his authority holds only as long as the people of Rome-from senators and soldiers to priests and citizens-believe that the gods favor him.As chief Vestal Virgin of Rome, Pomponia continues to devote her life to the Vestal order and the sacred flame of Vesta. She has risen to a position of esteem in Caesar's inner circle, yet the proximity sees her struggle to manage Caesar's conniving wife Livia. Tensions rise even more as a terrifying contagion ravages the city, indiscriminately striking down strong and weak.Yet nothing is as dangerous to Pomponia as the vengeance of a malevolent nobleman, Soren, whose machinations against her threaten not just her friendship with Caesar, but everything she loves. To Be Wolves is book two in The Vesta Shadows, an epic trilogy that must be ready by candlelight. The gripping sequel to Brides of Rome, it introduces all-new characters, from scheming elites to celebrity slaves, while exploring an even darker side of Rome. The Vesta Shadows trilogy is part of the larger seven-novel world created by author Debra May Macleod, novels that chronicle the Vestal order in Rome from its founding in the 8th century BCE to its banishment in the 4th century CE.
