After releasing two albums for Peaceville, Akercocke's Earache debut is where the band's remarkable sound really came into it's own. Drawing equally from death metal, black metal and progressive rock, the result is a luxuriously dark and sprawling magnum opus that's as grandiose as it is thoroughly evil. Whilst the quartet would get even proggier on later releases, Choronzon stands as a perfect example of forward thinking extreme metal that sacrifices none of the genre's intense, primal power.
