If Agharta was the fire of a volcanic eruption, Pangaea is the relentless flow of the lava that follows. Recorded during the evening set at Osaka’s Festival Hall on February 1, 1975, this album serves as the darker, more atmospheric companion to the afternoon session. It captures the final, exhausted, yet brilliantly inventive moments of Miles Davis’s mid-70s ensemble just months before he would disappear into a five-year hiatus.
The album is comprised of two massive, side-long improvisations: "Zimbabwe" and "Gondwana." On these tracks, the septet—featuring the legendary rhythm section of Michael Henderson and Al Foster—crafts a dense, swirling vortex of sound. The music moves away from the aggressive funk-rock of the afternoon and leans deeper into ambient textures, world-music influences, and extended, trancelike grooves that seem to stretch time itself.
The interplay between guitarists Pete Cosey and Reggie Lucas reaches a fever pitch here, with Cosey’s unconventional tunings and synth-like textures creating a backdrop that is both eerie and futuristic. Miles himself, battling significant physical pain at the time, delivers some of his most haunting and vulnerable trumpet work, punctuated by dark, minimalist organ chords that act as signals to steer the band’s direction.
This high-quality reissue preserves the expansive soundstage required to appreciate the complexity of the performance. The separation between Sonny Fortune’s soaring flute passages and the intricate percussion work by Mtume is rendered with startling realism. Pangaea is a masterpiece of "dark funk" and a precursor to ambient and industrial music, standing as a testament to Davis's role as a perpetual pioneer who refused to look back
