This book addresses the past and present of maqam music. The history of maqam theories, change in a music culture and the comparative analysis of historically related music cultures are the main themes of the twelve articles that are based on papers read at the third meeting of the Maqam Study Group of the International Council for Traditional Music. The musics studied are the classical traditions of the Middle East and North India, and Greek popular music.
