Twelve year old Karana lives on the island of the Blue Dolphins - a small island near California. One morning hunters arrive from over the sea - with terrible results.
Suddenly Karana is alone on the island and she has to fend for herself. She is afraid, but makes friends with the birds and animals and hopes for a ship to come and find her.
