This first novella introduces Murderbot, a security droid who has hacked its control system. It would rather indulge in watching TV shows than deal with humans, but when a mission goes wrong, it must help the team of scientists it is assigned to protect. The story concerns self-awareness, free will, and the desire to be left alone.

Murderbot sets out to uncover the truth behind a massacre it vaguely remembers being involved in. It partners with a research transport AI, dubbed ART, and together, they head to the mining facility where the tragedy occurred. This instalment focuses on Murderbot’s investigation into its past.
